Homeschooling has become an increasingly popular educational alternative for families around the world. Whether motivated by personalized learning, flexibility, or a desire to be more involved in their children's education, more parents are embracing the journey of homeschooling. According to research, roughly 6% of U.S. school-age children were homeschooled in 2021-2022. (https://www.nheri.org/research-facts-on-homeschooling/)
If you're considering homeschooling your child(ren), you might be feeling excited and a little overwhelmed about where to begin. Don't worry; this blog post will guide you through the essential steps to start homeschooling and create an enriching learning environment for your child. Make sure to get all the way to the end for a BONUS FREEBIE from me!!
1. Understand Your State's Laws
Before diving into homeschooling, familiarize yourself with the homeschooling laws and regulations in your country or state. THIS WILL BE YOUR MOST IMPORTANT STEP!! You can get yourself in major trouble if you aren't following the laws.
Side Note: For my Texas homeschoolers, I wrote a post about our laws that you can read HERE.
Every region has its own set of rules, including registration requirements, curriculum guidelines, and record-keeping mandates. Ensure that you comply with all legal obligations to avoid any potential issues. The best place to check your state's laws is Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) at https://hslda.org.
Take some time to get familiar with this site. They have a TON of information and resources that will benefit you and I could go on and on about this site. But you aren't here for that yet. To find your state's laws. From the home screen you will see the Legal tab. Hover over the Legal tab, which will pop down an option page for State Homeschool Laws. Click on that to open the interactive U.S. map.
Now, choose your state from FIND MY STATE window. I live in Texas for my example.
Look how amazing this page is. State Laws at your fingertips! Even more amazing that each of those underlined answers take you to another link describing even more about that law.
*Texas homeschoolers please check out more about our laws in this blog post.
Click HERE to go directly to the Homeschooling Laws by State. Make sure you fully understand what the laws mean and how you have to follow them to comply with your state. Everything you do in your homeschool depends on this!
2. Define Your Homeschooling Philosophy and Goals
Homeschooling allows you to tailor your child's education to their individual needs and interests. Start by defining your homeschooling philosophy and setting clear goals for your child's learning journey. Consider your child's learning style, strengths, weaknesses, and passions when determining what you want to achieve through homeschooling.
For example, my philosophy is to learn by doing. I find many opportunities throughout our lives that turn in to learning without it being planned. My goals are to follow Texas homeschool laws but to teach them things they wouldn't normally get from public education.
Read more about defining your philosophy and goals in my blog post HERE!
3. Research & Select a Curriculum
There are numerous homeschooling curricula available, ranging from pre-packaged options to a more eclectic mix of resources. Take the time to research various curricula, considering factors such as academic rigor, teaching style, and alignment with your educational philosophy and goals. Don't hesitate to experiment with different materials until you find what works best for your child. A great resource to help you figure this step out is Cathy Duffy Reviews at https://cathyduffyreviews.
This is how I narrowed down my curriculum. Please know that this step will take you some time because there is A TON of options to choose from.
I wrote another post explaining all of the different approaches to education to help you further decide which fits you and your family the best. You can read that post HERE!
4. Create a Homeschooling Schedule
Having a well-structured schedule is crucial for a successful homeschooling experience. While homeschooling offers flexibility, maintaining a consistent routine can help children thrive. Design a daily or weekly schedule that includes academic lessons, breaks, physical activities, and time for exploration and creativity. Trust me when I say kids STRIVE with schedules.
5. Set-Up a Learning Space
Designate a specific area in your home as the dedicated learning space. This space should be free from distractions and equipped with all the necessary materials like textbooks, art supplies, a computer, and a comfortable learning environment. An organized and inviting space can foster a positive learning atmosphere.
Ours is as simple as our kitchen table for independent work and our couch for combined subjects. It does not need to be anything fancy like you see on Pinterest! I wish I had those gorgeous rooms only for homeschooling, but I don't have the space or time to maintain it.
6. Seek Support and Resources
Homeschooling can sometimes feel isolating, but it doesn't have to be. Connect with local homeschooling communities, online forums, or social media groups to share experiences, seek advice, and find support. Additionally, explore local libraries, museums, and educational websites for resources that can complement your curriculum.
Facebook is this girls' favorite friend. I join all of the local homeschool groups and find what they are offering that fits our needs. This is how we found a chess club, archery, homeschool specific events, discounts and more. It can also be a place to connect and vent when you might need anyone who can relate to something homeschool related. You NEED those people in your life during this journey.
7. Be Flexible & Open to Adaptation
One of the greatest advantages of homeschooling is the ability to adapt and tailor the learning process. Be open to adjusting your approach based on your child's progress and evolving needs. Embrace flexibility in your methods and schedule, allowing your child to explore their interests and learn at their own pace. Don't feel like a failure if one thing doesn't work for you. You will be SO much happier when you find what does work best for your children.
8. Document Progress & Keep Records
As a homeschooling parent, you may be required to maintain records of your child's progress and educational achievements. (Make sure you understand your own state's laws!) Keep track of completed assignments, tests, and projects, as well as any extracurricular activities or field trips. These records can help demonstrate your child's academic growth and ensure compliance with homeschooling regulations.
Starting the homeschooling journey can be both challenging and rewarding for parents and children alike. Remember that every child is unique, and the key to successful homeschooling lies in tailoring the educational experience to meet their individual needs. Stay committed to your child's learning journey, stay informed about homeschooling laws, and don't hesitate to reach out for support when needed. With dedication and enthusiasm, homeschooling can be an incredibly fulfilling and transformative educational path for your family.
Happy homeschooling!
